NASCC personnel remember 9/11 fallen
Personnel aboard NAS Corpus Christi held a 9/11 remembrance ceremony at the base fire station, Sept. 11.
Base and community leaders, Sailors and civilians gathered for the ceremony, which honored the lives that were lost and courage that was exhibited during the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Nearly 3,000 people were killed and more than 6,000 were injured when hijacked airplanes slammed into towers one and two of the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field near Shanksville in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, on Sept. 11, 2001.
“Remembering 9-11 is always gut-wrenching and painful, but it is essential that we do it, every year, to remember the fallen,” said NASCC Commanding Officer Capt. Chris Jason, the guest speaker for the ceremony. “We remember not only those who died on that terrible day, but also those that have given their lives in the global war on terror since 9-11”
In addition to honoring the fallen, the ceremony was also a way for people to remember how Americans set aside their differences and came together as one in the days following the attacks.
“It is important to honor the courage and selfless sacrifice of so many on that day, from ordinary people helping each other to the brave first responders who ran into the danger, while also honoring all those who have served and sacrificed in the war on terror,” said Jason. “We must commit ourselves to being the country that we were on 9-12: united, resolved, and patriotic.”
Immediately following the ceremony, base personnel participated in a 5-kilometer Heroes Run around the installation.
