Captain’s Column

The month of May is filled with numerous celebrations, but there is one that is particularly close to many of our hearts – Military Spouse Appreciation Day.

National Military Spouse Appreciation Day is celebrated on the Friday before Mother’s Day. This year it will be observed on Friday, May 10.

It is a special day set aside to tell our military spouses why they matter and why they are needed. The Navy is successful because it is a tight-knit team that is flexible and adaptable to the ever changing environment and requirements. That teamwork starts at home, and our spouses are an enormous force multiplier.

On National Military Spouse Appreciation Day, we will honor the contributions and sacrifices made by our spouses. Our spouses are the backbone of the families who support our Sailors, whether we are deployed, in training, handling emergencies or standing the watch in service to our nation.

Their support is crucial and essential to effectively meet the command mission. And, we appreciate every moment that they dedicate to ensuring our family is healthy and prepared to carry out the routine of each day. On May 10, we have an extra opportunity to show our spouses how much we appreciate all they do!

President Ronald Reagan recognized the importance of spouse’s commitment to the readiness and well-being of military members and declared May 23, 1984, the first Military Spouse Day with Proclamation 5184. Later, the date was “standardized” by declaring the Friday preceding Mother’s Day as Military Spouse Day.

Military spouses often sacrifice their careers, under-go multiple moves, leave behind friends and family, and raise children on their own for the sake of supporting their military member.

Our military spouses are key components to our Navy team who are essential to the strength of the nation and they serve our country just as we do, 24/7, 365 days a year.

Thank you for all you do! Your support and service is appreciated! Enjoy your day. I’ll see you around the base.
