Captain’s Column

Last Thursday started off just like any other day.

I was on the flight line getting ready to brief for an upcoming flight event when the Executive Officer of VT-28 flagged me down.

He had just received a phone call alerting him to something happening at the North gate, shortly after my phone started ringing. In less than a minute, the plan for the day was completely re-written.

By now, I am sure many of you have already heard of the unfortunate event that occurred.

Full details of the event will not be available until after the completion of several important investigations.

We look to analyze what happened and attempt to reduce the likelihood of it happening again.

I posted a message on Facebook last Friday and I think it is important to repeat it here to ensure the word gets out to as many people as possible.

“As we wrap up our involvement in the Citadel Shield/Solid Curtain Exercise series, I would like to thank those who live and work aboard NASCC for their patience and flexibility.

Exercises and drills can disrupt normal routines and cause inconveniences, but I can assure you every effort was made to minimize those inconveniences while maximizing the training opportunities and review of procedures for Security, Fire and Emergency Services and our Emergency Operations Center personnel.

The response to the real-world incident that occurred yesterday on board the installation is why we train.

While details will follow from the investigations that are currently underway, the rapid and decisive actions of the Security and Fire personnel minimized the loss of life, danger to innocent bystanders, and damage to our facilities.

The safety and security of the tenants and dependents on base is our number-one priority.

The brave response that we witnessed yesterday is proof that our training is working and that our number-one priority is being upheld.

When you see one of the Fire Fighters or Security Personnel, please give them a Thank You.

They very much deserve it.”
