Have you met? ….. Leah LeMaire

Leah LeMaire is new to NAS Corpus Christi and works as the sports and aquatic coordinator. If sports or fitness is an interest you have, then she’s someone you need to know.

LeMaire is from Corpus Christi and graduated from Mary Carrol High School where she was a star on the girls’ basketball team.

After high school, she moved to San Angelo, Texas, to attend college and play basketball for Angelo State University.

While there, LeMaire was in a car accident that nearly killed her. She was ejected from the vehicle, suffering multiple life threatening injuries and had to be transported by medevac to the hospital.

Though many believed she would never walk properly again, let alone play basketball, LeMaire proved the doubters wrong.

After months of rehabilitation she was back on the basketball court and starting for the Angelo State women’s basketball team.

“The hardest part about my rehab was having to slow down,” LeMaire said. “Before my accident I thought I was invincible and nothing could stop me, but the accident changed my life and perspective for the better. I may not have come back as fast as I wanted, but I came back smarter and I’ll take that.”

LeMaire, the youngest of three children, said her family played a huge role in her recovery. LeMaire said, “I’m so lucky to have a great family. My parents, brother and sister always encouraged and motivated me, especially on the hardest days.”

During her spare time, LeMaire loves to attend church, travel, and participate in charity work. She is an active member for the Wings of Texas charity organization which helps push people in wheel chairs while running in marathons or other organized running events.

LeMaire says she loves to travel. She just returned from an 18-day backpacking vacation where she visited Thailand and Greece. Her favorite part of the trip was the food.

LeMaire said she is grateful for the opportunities her position offers and how it allows her to grow professionally. “If a group of people want to have a sports activity on base, I’m more than happy to set that up and help them in any way.”
