Captain’s Column
We are finally entering the long term recovery stage following Hurricane Harvey.
If you had not heard, the NASCC Command Staff has left the 2nd deck of the Navy Operation Support Center and “temporarily permanently” moved to the 5th floor of Naval Health Clinic Corpus Christi. We will be there quite some time because Building 2 is prioritized much lower on the list for repairs following the hurricane.
With our move to the 5th floor, Naval Fleet & Family Support Center staff has moved to the 4th floor – in their same spaces one floor down. We will continue to move supporting entities with the long term look being the 4th deck is the “services deck”… FFSC, NMCRS, Veterans Affairs; and the 5th being the consolidated command…front office, JAG/RLSO, PAO, Admin support.
We have prioritized our Hurricane Harvey repairs based on customer need. Following roofing repairs of the flight line hangars and other key operational facilities, our first project is repairing Bldg. 103, the Fitness Center; because we know it is essential to the health and welfare of all of us. It will be closed beginning March 11, for about eight weeks in order to completely replace the roof, repair flashing, gutters and downspouts, and complete interior water damage repairs.
The interior work includes replacement of damaged insulation, drywall and ceiling tiles as well as repairing a portion of the HVAC ductwork. The contractor is working diligently to ensure the fitness center repairs go smoothly and the facility is opened to patrons in a timely manner.
While that is going on, some of the Fitness Center equipment will be temporarily available in the E-Street Gym. There is not a lot of capacity, but it is an attempt to support you as best we can while Bldg. 103 is closed.
The E-Street Gym will be close Friday and Saturday, March 9-10, while equipment is being moved. It will reopen Sunday, March
11. The recreation staff has been preparing to make room for the extra equipment, so patrons will see spaces “opened” that had not been in use for a while. E-Street Gym will also offer use of some fitness equipment and group exercise classes.
Please bear with us as we make these repairs – we are not simply putting a patch on something that needs to be fixed. We are making permanent repairs from Hurricane Harvey damage. Thank you for your patience.
