GIRLS SOFTBALL TEAM

A girls softball team is to be organized. This will be in the first all girl team on the Station and will hold its initial meeting on July 23, 1000, at the home of Miss Norma Homesy. The house number is 269, and all who are interested are requested to be present.

B O X I N G

The boxing team of the United States Naval Air Station came through in excellent style Friday night, July 18, at the regular Smoker in town Hall, Corpus Christi. The Navy boys performed in six of the eight bouts and they received only one setback in all eight battles. The one licking resulted when Ensign Bernard Mitchell, instructor at the Station, attempted to slug it out with Byrl Clayton, classy 159-pounder of Corpus Christi, in the third bout of the program. The fight was stopped in the opening round after Mitchell was downed for the second time.

DANCE

Members of the Navy Mother’s Club of Corpus Christi will be hostesses at a dance for Navy men, Tuesday night, July 22, at 2000, according to “Smokey” Joe Peek, whose “Dive Bombers” are scheduled to play. The dance will be held at the Civic Center in the city, and a capacity crowd of 150 couples is expected. Refreshments will be served by the Navy Mothers and beautiful girls will be supplied for “stags.” Tickets are on sale at the Chaplain’s office at 25c for Stags and 50c for couples.

SCUTTLED?

All men who were assigned to the large Assembly and Repair shop have been transferred to the different Training Squadrons on the Station and on outlying fields. The plan is to be manned soon by Civil Service personnel. Barracks 17-1 appears to be mighty quiet after the transfer of all of its men.

OPEN HOUSE

Plans for an open house are being made by the Naval Air Station. The open house will be held the latter part of August, at which time the new highway to the South Gate will be officially opened. At this time, a souvenir yearbook will be offered for sale to visitors and Station personnel. This book will contain information and pictures of the construction of the Naval Station as well as pictures of the personnel. The book will be printed by a Corpus Christi printer and will be paid for by advertisements sold for the booklet. All profits from the advertisements sold in the book as well as from the sale of the books will go to the Texas Auxiliary of the Naval Relief Society.
