October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Are you due for your screening mammogram? According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women.

In 2019, an estimated 286,600 new cases of invasive breast cancer and 62,930 cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in U.S. women. There is a one in eight chance that a woman in the U.S. will develop breast cancer in 2019 and nearly 42,000 women are predicted to die of breast cancer in 2019.

Mammography remains the single most important tool for detecting breast cancer and the American Cancer Society recommends that women be given the choice to start screening at age 40.

The Naval Health Clinic Corpus Christi radiology department offers Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (3D mammograms) with improved cancer detection compared 2D mammograms.

Women enrolled at NHC Corpus Christi, who are age 40 or older and have no breast concerns, may self-refer for their annual screening mammogram.

Women with breast concerns, such as breast lumps or abnormal nipple discharge, should be evaluated by their doctor first. For your convenience we offer walk-in screening mammograms Monday-Friday.

To schedule your mammogram or for further information, call the NHC Corpus Christi radiology department at 361-961-3466.
