SPILL RESPONSE / REPORTING
If you see chemicals or other liquids have spilled in the workplace or outside and it is something that shouldn’t run into the ground or drain or bay, you need to report it.
Per environmental regulations, reportable spills that affect surface water quality and stormwater must be reported within 24 hours. A reportable spill is any release of a chemical to surface water and storm drains that cause sheen, discoloration, or odor. Just one drop of oil in the bay is reportable. For the Navy, any spilled AFFF, even on an impervious surface, such as concrete is reportable. Another reportable spill is an oil or fuel spill with volume greater than 25 gallons or a hazardous substance spill that exceeds its reportable quantity, even if it is on an impervious surface. Since the list of reportable quantities for each chemical is very long, call NASCC Environmental Dept. for more information at 961-5353.
Call 911 for emergencies or situations that have the potential to harm human health and safety. Call the CDO at 361-534-9093 as soon as safely possible for reportable spills. Navy and regulatory notifications are required immediately and within 24 hours of a spill.
