Have you met? ….. Father John Gaffney
Father John Gaffney is the new Catholic priest for NAS Corpus Christi serving out of Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel.
Gaffney is new to NAS Corpus Christi, yet he has been in the South Texas area since 2012.
Gaffney said his uncle, an Army colonel, would always encourage him to join the military as a chaplain. Though he didn’t join the military, Father Gaffney believes it’s a great honor to serve the military community.
“There’s a lot of young people here and I know it’s important for people to have a strong faith. Especially when people are protecting our country in sometimes dangerous ways,” Gaffney says.
Some of his interests include work around his house, golf, and fantasy football. He has been a priest for nine years and looks forward to serving the needs of the Catholic community here on base
Some of the services offered by Gaffney are funerals and serving of the sacraments which include baptisms, confirmation, marriages, reconciliation, anointing the sick, and Eucharist.
Gaffney says mass is held every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday at 11:30 a.m. at the chapel on base. Sunday mass is held at 9 a.m. at the chapel.
The official time for confessions is Friday morning at 11 a.m., but Gaffney says it’s really anytime anybody has a moment and wants to talk to him.
Gaffney’s office is located on the Naval Health Clinic fifth floor in room 5140. Gaffney can be reached at john.gaffney1.ctr@navy.mil or (361) 961-9349.
