NHCCC promotes patient safety through recognition

Naval Health Clinic Corpus Christi’s (NHCCC) high reliability team nominated two top-ranked Good Catch staff to Navy Medicine East (NME).
Each month NME recognizes staff across its 100 medical centers, hospitals and branch health clinics who step up, speak up and take action to ensure the best health outcomes for patients as part of its Good Catch Recognition Award Program.
NHCCC is dedicated to becoming a high reliability organization and providing the safest, highest quality patient care possible.
“One characteristic of high reliability is a preoccupation with failure; meaning always being alert for the smallest sign that risks and threats to safety may occur soon,” said Jeannine Hardwick, NHCCC Patient Safety.
Regardless of whether care is provided in a civilian or military health care facility, medicine - by its very nature - comes with risk. That’s why NHCCC’s high-reliability team remains focused on improving patient safety, quality of care and enhancing both the patient and staff experience. The Good Catch Award is one of the many ways NHCCC encourages this culture of safety.
According to The Joint Commission, millions of people every year suffer adverse effects of medication errors. NHCCC’s latest Good Catch winners, Denise Bush, and Stephanie Rotter, from the Pharmacy, ensured that was not the case for the patients they were filling prescription for. Because of their vigilance, likely medication errors were avoided.
Staff who demonstrate attention to detail ensure that patients have a positive and safe health outcome.
Recognizing winners at NHCCC helps maintain a culture of safety and promotes staff engagement in patient safety.
“Many people would not take the time to report a Good Catch, rationalizing a no harm-no foul thinking,” said Hardwick. “However a Good Catch is a gift, as it allows us to review systems process in order to promote the safest care and outcomes possible for our patients.” (From NHC Corpus Christi Public Affairs )
