57th Annual Navy Regatta to be held Aug. 3-4

The 57th Annual Navy Regatta will be held the weekend of Aug. 3-4.

It’s a weekend of fun, sailing, camaraderie and community partnership with the military aboard Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, the Corpus Christi Yacht Club and the Bay Yacht Club.

The annual event began in 1962, and is made possible because of a partnership with the Corpus Christi Yacht Club, Bay Yacht Club and the military.

Besides sailing across the bay, the regatta features a Titanic Cup race, in which teams compete in their homemade vessels constructed of anything but boat or aircraft parts.

The schedule for the weekend’s events include:

Saturday

11 a.m., at the CCYC - Warning Signal for first class of the Navy Base Race

3 p.m., at NASCC’s Sunfish Beach – Titanic Cup

6 p.m., at the Catalina Club – Dinner/ Dance and trophy presentation.

Sunday

12 noon, at NASCC’s Sunfish Beach – Warning Signal for first class of Military Cup Challenge Race.

3 p.m., at CCYC – Trophy presentation

Civilian vessels are looking for military personnel to ride with them Saturday, from the Yacht Club to the base, and on Sunday, from the base to the Yacht Club during the Military Cup Challenge Race.

Military personnel, who would like to take part in the regatta sailing Saturday and/ or Sunday, should contact MAC Jermaine Glover at 961-1738 or Jermaine.p.glover@navy.mil.

Entries for the Titanic Cup race are also needed. This race will take place Saturday, beginning at 3 p.m. along the NAS Corpus Christi seawall – from the fishing pier to Sunfish Beach. Glover is also collecting entries for the Titanic Cup.

Titanic Cup Rules

1)The craft must float.

2) The boat must be powered by “wind.”

3) Craft must be equipped for towing to start line.

4) The craft must be of unconventional construction (NOT incorporating boats/ aircraft or parts of boats/aircraft). Construction cost shall not exceed $75, and should be built by rational beings (as opposed to engineers), the crew, or other volunteers.

5) The craft must be commanded by an officer or mate capable of maintaining good order and discipline among the crew.

6) The craft must be capable of sailing 50 meters downwind without sinking other contesting crafts, and stay afloat at the same time.

7) Entries will be judged on originality, most devious interpretations of the rules, deportment of the crew, and adherence to the traditional values of mariners.

8) Judging will be conducted by a committee of Sailors, the NASCC commanding officer, and/or a nominated official.

9) The winning military organization will receive a suitable trophy for displaying until the next Regatta, at which time this “Auld Mug” will be again contested.

10) There must be at least one person per floating vessel to compete.

11) Power-assisted vessels may not assist or impede the racers.

12) If your sailing vessel sinks, you will be required to retrieve it from the waters!
