Captain’s Column
Happy Birthday to the United States Navy!
We are looking pretty good for being 243 years old! In my opinion we will continue to get better with age.
I am a United States Sailor.
October 13, 1775, marks the day the Continental Congress established a naval force in order to strike out against British commerce, to frustrate British sea power, and to defend the beginnings of our great country. Ultimately that initial collection of small ships was sold off due to the Congress lacking funds, but that time period without a Navy was short lived, as the country discovered that its interests were tied to the trade up and down the coast, in the Caribbean, and across the Atlantic. That trade would need to be defended, that trade required the Navy!
I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States and obey the orders of those appointed over.
Like many things in the beginning, there were a great many lessons learned by trial under fire. Today, the United States Navy is the most lethal and capable naval force on the planet. That lethality and capability is built on the efforts, and the commitment and dedication of those who have served before us. Throughout the Navy’s 243 years, and many, many wars and combat engagements, our Sailors have blazed the trail with technology and innovation to lead the way in naval warfare.
I represent the fighting spirit of the Navy and those who have gone before me to defend freedom and democracy around the world.
Our present day ships, submarines and aircraft are the direct results of the determination and grit of Sailors who helped design, develop and fight those platforms. But, those ships, submarines and aircraft are just hardware. What makes today’s Navy so great are the people who make up the team. Working as a team, on the aircraft, in the squadron, as part of the Wing, will always add up to something greater than the individual. Our commitment to our teammates is what sets us above those who would do us harm.
I proudly serve my country’s Navy combat team with Honor, Courage and Commitment.
The United States Navy is a force without equal, but to maintain that edge, to stay ahead of our competitors we must always look to improve. We must seek out every opportunity to enhance and advance our capabilities…at our watch stations and with each other. We must always strive to take care of the team and that always starts with improving ourselves.
I am committed to excellence and the fair treatment of all.
Happy Birthday to the United States Navy.
